Healthy Weight Loss for Teens

The teenage years of our lives are times of great confusion and uncertainty about who we are and where we are going. It is a time where we are stuck between a child and an adult, our hormones are raging and our bodies are changing. This metamorphic period in our lives can cause many emotional and physical challenges that may lead to insecurity and lack of self confidence.

Many teens worry about how to loose weight. Teens have a special challenge in losing weight for a couple of reasons. First, hormones are raging, sometimes causing weight fluctuations they never expected. Second, they are dealing with maturing bodies. Girls start to develop curves and boys start to bulk up. Caught up in these changes teens are often insecure about their developing bodies. It is no surprise that weight is one of their key concerns.

Keeping in mind that teens are naturally insecure and uncomfortable with their bodies, imagine how being even slightly overweight can affect their psyches. As we all know children and young adults don’t need any ammunition to make hurtful remarks and jests toward their peers, so let’s face it those that actually do have faults are prime targets and the results of these jests can be devastating, especially to teenage girls.

An overweight teen may be enticed to take drastic steps to take off that excess weight- steps that can be dangerous and harmful to their health. This is why it is so important for parents and teachers to be aware of safe and effective ways that teens can utilize to manage their weight and live a healthy lifestyle.

Overcoming Hurdles and Moving in the Right Direction

The first obstacle that a teenager will need to overcome is the onset of depression caused by jokes and jests and the overall feeling of self worthlessness. It is impossible for one to make positive changes in their lives when they are living in a depressive state. Next, they will need to be made aware of the dangers of crash and trend diets, starvation, and utilizing unsafe drugs that can cause great damage to their bodies and that do not produce lasting results.

They must be educated on getting proper nutrition and exercise and how this will not only help them to shed those extra pounds but also to be healthy as adults. We don’t want them to jump from diet to diet for the rest of their lives never accomplishing their goals and putting themselves at risks for diseases and conditions that are attributed to being overweight, such as heart disease and diabetes.

As mentioned above, do not turn to fad diets and starvation techniques to reduce weight, these techniques can leave one feeling irritable and tired – as we know, teens do not need extra ammunition in this area! The starvation technique is especially dangerous and ineffective. Consider your body like a computer that programs itself, when you begin to deprive it of nutrition the body will realize this and beginning to expend less calories and actually store more fat for future use. Also, binge dieters tend to consume more food when they actually do eat and in most cases they eat the wrong foods and thus actually put on more weight rather than shedding pounds.

1. Consult a doctor before attempting to lose weight.

Whether you are a teen or an adult you should never start a weight loss program without consulting your doctor first. Because of their insecurity about their bodies some teens believe themselves more over weight than they actually are. A doctor can put the teen's weight in perspective. The doctor can also discern if there are any medical conditions that might be exacerbated by specific forms of dieting or exercise. A teen's weight loss regimen should be tailored to lose a healthy amount of weight - not to look like the dancers in music videos. As a parent the most important thing you can do is provide emotional and moral support to your teen.

2. Be safe.

There are lots of unhealthy ways to lose weight. Make sure your teen is losing weight in the safest way possible. Medical studies say teens should lose no more than one or two pounds per week. Losing weight any faster poses significant health risks. Teens should never use diet pills to reach their weight loss goals.

3. Set a long term goal.

Though it might be tempting to use some fad diet to lose 20 pounds in a week, it is a bad idea. Your teen will only gain that weight back after a week or two. Weight control needs to be a long term goal. Help your teen to set a reasonable number for their weight loss, whether that is ten, 20 or 30 pounds. Help them reach that goal in a safe and healthy manner. Once again, cheerleader is the most important role you can play. Studies have proven that teens who have family support show better success in their weight loss goals than those who try to go it alone.

4. Eat the right foods.

If your teen regularly eats dinner with the whole family, the whole family needs to support the weight loss goals you have set. Your dinner menu needs to include foods that will help your teen loose weight – think lean meats, vegetables and whole grains. Creating a separate meal for your teen will only make him or her feel left out and embarrassed. Healthy, tasty meals are good for the whole family. When you go shopping make sure to buy plenty of healthy food for your teen so he or she never has to choose between going hungry and eating ten cookies.

With proper nutrition and exercise our teens can lose those unwanted pounds and there are natural herbal and nutritional supplements available if they feel they need some extra help. Utilizing completely natural weight management aids that do not produce any unwanted side effects can help teens have more energy, become more alert, and more apt to retain what they learn. Rely on sound teen weight loss tips and you will be sure to see amazing results!

Thanks for the wonderful tips on how to loose weight. As, a teen my concern seem to be on weight, I have to watch up for what I eat, how much exercise I am getting, and it is affecting my social life.

Cool, teen weight loss tips, it makes me think about the junk food I put into my body on a daily basis, scary!!!

Having a great sounding diet plan is important, and drinking plenty of water and fruits, such as fibrous foods and raw vegetables is vital to balancing your nutrient intake!

I think alot of teenagers can grasp the basic concept of eating right, if they eat too much the food they eat can turn into body fat causing health and weight issues, but contrary if they eat too little they may starve to death. A lot of diet program put a lot of emphasis on the right exercise and state of mind, but I think teenagers these days just need to be less lazy and get involve in social activities and avoid the diet pills at all cost.

Here are two weight loss tips for you to enjoy!
First, rub your belly for 1-2 minutes after each meal. For some strange reasons rubbing your belly helps your digestion system. Start with small circles from your belly button then bigger until they cover the whole stomach region.
Second, use snacks such as string cheese or apples. Both food have benefits string cheese have the protein and apples have the fiber you need.

Losing weight as a teen has always been a struggle for me at 16 years old, 5'9 and weighting 220lbs I knew I had to do something about my
weight. With the help of family and friends I had lost almost a 100lbs and hope to loose more!

Teenagers eat more junk food with high calorie, and they are doing less to wear it off, so if you store
less fattie food in the food then the chances of them eating something that is not there will help
your kid wear off those extra pounds. I'm a single mother of two teenage girls who eat nothing but fast food!

I can't emphasize enough about having good nutrition, extremely over-weight teenagers may think that the fastest way
to loose a lot of weight is to eat as little or starve oneself. As, a teen I had tried all kinds of exercise, and involve in weight watchers but I can't seem to be able to shed those extra pounds no matter what I do. Where is my magic pill?

I'm a parent of a teen who maybe addicted to Meth. These are the symptoms that I notice, irregular sleeping patterns, nervousness, panting - breathing heavy, and loosing weight at a rapid rate. Anyone know of any other signs I should look out for? Or know more about Meth?

Here are some tips to help your teen loose weight.
1. Be aware that teens will become irrated with any weight gain.
2. Offer them help, or convince them to see a nutritionist, so they can trace their eating habits.
3. Be as supportive as possible, and encourage them to join a weight loss training program.
4. Do not let them become depress, always talk with your teen openly about any weight issues that maybe bothering them.
5. Finally, don't give up, keep trying, and your teen will live a healthy lifestyle!

I have a daughter who is in her teenage now. I have advised her many times and gave some tips to lose her over-weight, but she is not listening to my words. I think this blog would help her understand the importance of losing weight.

I have a young niece who comes home only to tell me about dangerous eating habits of her friends who are dieting. I think a lot of them just don't know any better. I am going to pass this on.

Greetings!
I have accidently stumbled on this website when I was looking for info about loosing weight. I can't begin to tell how much this website has helped me, now I have goal, and I know how to reasch my weight loss goals for 2009! Go weight loss!

These are great tips. As a teenager I wanted to lose weight at times but my Mum said I was too young and didn't need to. I had a fat stomach and was larger than my sister and most of the girls in my class. I am not sure if I was overweight but I was never given the chance to find out. I am sure I would have benefited from healthier food and more exercise whether I was overweight or not.

lol @ rubbing your belly after a meal. does that actually work?

Nice tips. The important thing in losing weight for teens is healthy. Teens need the nutrient for growth, that's why they should eat the right food

Of course, what a great site and informative posts, I will bookmark this site. Regards

Some really good info here thanks. I like many other people have been trying for longer than I care to remember to loose weight. The Doctor keeps telling me to do something about and (and give up smoking) and although I do try, I just can't stick to it. My girlfriend is trying the new Fat Burning Furnace diet which she reckons is working really well and she has lost 5lbs in only a week - has anyone around here tried it and has it worked for you?

Nice site. Thanks for advertising on my Entrecard. It was a nice way to find out about you. Great advice here!
